Tool Loan Program: Status

Thanks to Ken Danzey, Chris Betjemann and Bill Venable, we now have nearly (but not quite) all the tools needed to disassemble and reassemble the engines made between 1936 and 1969. Most of the tools are made by Matra and were originally intended for use in authorized BMW shops.

We do not yet have one of Ed Korn’s ‘Many-In-One’ tool kits. I believe the Ed Korn kit to be designed for limited use by the do-it-at-home mechanic, and is more than adequate for the job. The kit is compact, very well thought out, and weighs about one fourth of what the equivalent in Matra tools would be, not to mention the savings over collecting original hard to find and expensive shop tools.

That said, both sets of tools are important in filling out a loan crib. I like to think of the Matra tools as being like the hard bound books that thousands of folks check out of their local libraries annually, while the Ed Korn tools are the reinforced soft bound issues more easily replaced if damaged, and at the same time likely to reach a greater clientele with less cost.
